Dorcas South Africa was registered in 1995 as a "partner organisation" of Dorcas Aid International, a Dutch NGO that began in the Netherlands in 1980 when a small group of people assisted the poor in the communist block. Today Dorcas Aid International (DAI) still has its headquarters in the Netherlands, but operates worldwide providing development, social and relief aid in more than 200 projects in 20 countries. At the end of 2016 Dorcas Aid International closed its South African field office and Dorcas South Africa continues as a locally registered NPC with its own local board and local office. Today we work mainly in Gauteng.

Dorcas South Africa works to restore dignity, self- worth and a sense of pride amongst the poor, destitute and marginalised in our communities. We do this irrespective of race, religion, gender or political conviction, by encouraging self- reliance, providing social aid and assisting in emergency situations.
