Write a reviewPension Fund Fraud ConferencePrioritising Prevention03-04 June 2009, Southern Sun Grayston Hotel in SandtonThe South African pensions industry has been bedeviled by cases of fraud, and it has been accused of lack of accountability, disclosure and transparency in their dealings with the members or members' savings. Still there are some who believe that the companies in this industry have complicated structures and their business conduct is not competitive enough. This has often created confusion and mistrust of trustees and administrators by members whose funds are being mismanaged. As a result the government has promised to overhaul the retirement fund industry by 2010 and a bill called financial services laws general amendment bill has been tabled in parliament. In light of this how should administrators and trustees best manage funds to combat fraudulent activities? What other policy and administrative issues need to be looked at as a way of building confidence in the industry? Will the overhaul of the industry affect the pensions industry positively or negatively? This conference seeks to draw experts and major stakeholders of the retirement industry to deliberate on preventive issues that will help to combat fraud and lessen the bad impact this has had on the industry and society at large.Mamodupi Mohala, Pensions Fund AdjudicatorProfessor Mervyn King, Chairman, Brait South AfricaFrik van Eeden, Managing Director, Phandahanu ConsultingKrishen Sukdev, Consulting Actuary, ABSADr. JH Minaar, Associate, Ethics South Africa Geraldine Fowler, Managing Director, GQM Fund AdministratorsHugo van Zyl, Head of Operations, South African Insurance Crime BureauDavid Garel, Partner, BowmangilfillanStesanus G Smith, Chartered Accountant, SG Smith & Kie CompanyIvor Msimang, Founder, N M Holdings...and many others
