Morkel is a professional violin and viola teacher and string orchestra specialist. Morkel has various string ensembles in Gauteng and performs regularly with the Gauteng Philharmonic orchestra and the Goldberg Chamber Players. Morkel started playing the violin the 18th of October 1974. Since then he turned his hand to Viola, teaching and conducting. He has been playing professionally for the past 31 years. The last 13 years he has been involved with the Johannesburg Philharmonic, the Johannesburg Festival, the UP symphony and the Unisa Music Foundation Symphony Orchestra. Since its inception Morkel has been a full-time member of the Gauteng Philharmonic. Morkel is a founding member of Trio Goldberg and the Goldberg Quartet, performing serious repertoire in the classical gendre. The Beethoven Trio and quartet repertoire were extensively performed countrywide. The Trio and Quartet have both been nominated for Fiesta awards, giving recognition for outstanding performances during the Art festivals. He has assisted UNISA Music with special projects, amongst them, the establishment of the International Jazz School during September and October 2012. He is a music impresario and booking agent for all musical activities including putting orchestras together for popular musical groups' videos like Romanz and the Messe Solenne in collaboration with the Tshwane University of Technology. He furthermore assisted UNISA in the inception of the UNISA MUSIC FOUNDATION SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA and was the Manager of the UMFSO and produced and musically directed the all their concerts since inception till the end of 2013. Morkel is furthermore very involved in numerous outreach projects and assisted UNISA in starting a music school in Olievenhoutbosch just south of Pretoria. He recently conducted the SANYO strings during their orchestra course with concerts at the Linder and the Musaion as conclusion. He teaches Violin and Viola from beginner to licentiate level and covers the most important repertoire, TRINITY, ABRSM and UNISA. His students have passed Gr 8 Violin and Viola with UNISA, TRINITY and the ABRSM. He himself passed Gr8 Viola (UNISA 90%) and his grade 7 UNISA Harmony and Theory. He is also currently involved in Soshanguve under the auspices of UNISA, teaching UNISA Viola up to Gr 8 level and conducting the Menlopark High School Orchestra. He recently started 2 string orchestras, one for beginners up to Gr 3 music standard level and one for seniors, Gr 4 and higher music standard.
