Research has found that there are four basic human emotional needs that explain 60% of employees’ motivation: 1. The need to acquire; 2. The need to bond; 3. The need to comprehend; 4. The need to defend. All four of the needs must be met for team members to be motivated. They need to feel that their own needs have been met within an organisation before they can become enthusiastic about meeting the needs of clients. The benefits are obvious, but what enables team members to thrive in the work place? • Sharing of information, • Being allowed to use their own discretion, • Having decision-making powers, • Having trust and respect for other team members As a manager you need to respond to the basic emotional needs of your team. You are seen as having the most influence over their work experience. Team members who decide to leave an organisation are often leaving their immediate manager. If they do not see how to resolve issues, they will leave, even if the organisation has a lot to offer. The manager’s influence on a team is greater than the influence of the organisation. This is the reason that various teams within one organisation can experience widely different energies.
