Energy comes and goes in an organisation. This gives an organisation its unique character and plays a role in its ability to be successful. As a manager, your own behaviour and attitudes have a great influence on the mood and energy of the team, and ultimately the organisation. There are 3 levels of energy in an organisation: 1. Individual energy A manager’s energy influences the energy that comes from the team members. A power-sharing management style can have a huge impact on the team and their performance. Positive energy drives team members to approach their work in a productive way. Resilient team members focus on a problem and don’t give up in search of a solution. Emotional energy is derived from a positive attitude of team members towards their work. This creates feelings of inspiration and enthusiasm to reach their overall objectives and organisational priorities. 2. Team energy Team energy is bigger than all the different types of energy. Team members create social ideas and thoughts. Effective teams have shared, compatible knowledge which can be used towards achieving goals and objectives. Positive physical behaviour of team members towards their work creates energy. As a manager it is your responsibility to encourage team members to invest their efforts in a way that’ll give the organisation a competitive edge. 3. Organisational energy In the workplace, energy is the fuel on which organisations run. It inspires individuals to perform at higher levels than before, and it increases general well-being. An organisation forms an ‘energy engine’ which impacts on its members’ energy by: • Strategy - It sets the stage for the generation and depletion of energy. All organisations exist as part of a broader external business environment which includes competitors, clients and government regulations to name but a few. Organisations that are able to learn from their experiences, and to change the way that they function, generate energy. Adapting their internal structures ensures that they meet their strategic objectives. The ability to create positive energy within an organisation is the key to a productive and successful company. • Infrastructure - includes facilities, assets or equipment needed by staff members to carry out their work. Also needed are the policies, systems and procedures to be in place for example human resource (HR) practices, and the shared values and culture. The organisational infrastructure should be designed to promote energy on individual and ultimately organisational levels.
