As a successful manager you should take into account that people are different and diverse. There is no such thing as ‘One size fits all’ when it comes to motivating your team. Projects can both consume and generate energy, and team members can both energise or de-energise each other. Energy should be driven towards meeting the objectives of the team. As a manager you should control the energy of a team as it directly affects the quality and mood of a team members’ experience at work. The levels of well-being and happiness influences the amount of effort a team member is prepared to invest in a project. You should create a positive environment in which team members are motivated. This requires a certain mind-set and understanding that all team members are different with their own values and objectives. Team members cannot be seen as problems to be solved but as real people who need to be understood. There are three basic principles to keep in mind when dealing with team members: 1. Everyone has motivational energy Sometimes colleagues, who have low levels of energy at work, have high levels of energy at home. As a manager, you should understand that most team members can operate on high levels of energy at work, and contribute towards furthering the goals of the team. 2. Energy is frequently blocked Stress, frustration, broken promises and problems in your private life all contribute towards negative attitudes and behaviours. As a manager you should be aware that the most common block of energy is the perception that you, as manager, don’t care about the team members. This could cause team members to have an attitude of not caring about the manager or the teams’ objectives. 3. Removing energy blocks requires the participation of the team members Solutions cannot be forced on a team. A joint decision-making process where there is buy-in from all parties will ensure that energy is restored.
