To motivate your team, you as the manager have to meet your team’s emotional needs. This leads to positive energy and motivation. Each team member has the need to: 1. Acquire A fair reward system should be in place to give recognition to team members who give more than is required of them or by receiving recognition in front of peers. 2. Bond As a manager you should create and encourage opportunities for team members to bond with others outside the project team. This requires teamwork and openness. 3. Comprehend As a manager it is your responsibility to provide your individual team members with a detailed job description. The meaning and contribution of roles should be clearly set out. Team members are motivated by jobs that: • enable them to grow • learn and • offer a challenge. • The needs of each team member should be considered and opportunities should be created for each member to grow. 4. Defend A transparent and fair performance appraisal system addresses the need to defend. Team members need to be able to understand the reasons for various decisions made and given an opportunity to take part in the process. As a manager it is crucial to be open, honest and fair. When transparency is not there, • distrust develops and • team members become defensive. • Resistance to change is frequently experienced.
