Drivers Vision Screening

A free visual screening will be done to determine if your vision is suitable for driving. This screening is not a professional eye exam but tests your visual acuity and peripheral visual fields. We will issue you with a certificate that confirms that the bearer has undergone a screening in compliance with Regulation 102 of the National Road Traffic Act ( Act 93 of 1996)

If you need to wear glasses or contact lenses , a restriction will be noted on your license.

Following is information about vision requirements for codes A1, A,  B and EB:

  • The minimum visual acuity requirement is 6/12 for each eye with or without corrective lenses.
  • Drivers with acuity lower than 6/12 in one eye must  have a minimum of 6/9 visual acuity in the other eye.
  • You must have at least 50 degrees nasal - and 70 degree temporal  peripheral vision (the ability to see to the side) to have a license without restrictions. This is with or without corrective lenses.

For more information, contact our local Traffic Department.
