One of the things Eskom is asking home owners to do is switch off their geysers during the day as well as when you go on holiday. Geysers can account for up to 50% of the electricity bill so they are obviously one of the main things to focus on when trying to save electricity. Electrical geysers heat water by means of a large electrical element similar to that found in your kettle. They have a thermostat that switches the heating element off when the water reaches a preset temperature. That thermostat will also switch the heating element back on if the water drops below another lower preset temperature. If you switch off the power supplied to the geyser once the water inside has been heated, one prevents the thermostat automatically switching the heating element on and off repeatedly between times that you use hot water. Most geysers are quite well insulated so the water will cool down relatively slowly once heated. You will probably hardly notice the slightly lower temperature of the water at the end of the day, provided it was heated fully before the geyser was switched off. This rate of cooling can be decreased even further by installing a geyser blanket and hot water pipe insulation. How much electricity one can theoretically save will depend on how many times your thermostat would have normally switched the heating element on during the time period that the geyser is switched off. This varies from geyser to geyser. Clearly, the longer the period that the geyser is switched off for, the more times potentially that the heating element would switch on and thus the greater the potential saving. There are various automatic timers available that will switch off the geyser for you, saving you the effort. Some of these feature intelligence that checks to see that the water has been fully heated before activating. Installations by means of supply and fit cost R500 to R700 depending on your distribution board.
