Themba Trees is a wholesale tree nursery that propagates and grows small, medium and large indigenous and ornamental trees for the landscaping, municipal, agricultural and retail markets.
The business entails the following activities:
- Disease and Pest Control
At Themba Trees, we propagate trees from seeds and cuttings. As the trees grow we plant them over into bigger bags. The price of a tree depends on its bag size. We stock and sell 2.5litre, 10litre, 20litre, 50litre and 100litre trees. The approximate heights of these trees are 1m, 1.6m, 1.8m, 2.2m and 2.8m respectively.
We currently have 52 indigenous species and 19 exotic species stocked at Themba Trees. After three years of growing, we have close to 60 000 trees as counted in February this year.
The business requires regular potting of trees into larger size bags as the trees grow. Staking, pruning, feeding and irrigating the trees are then required in order to ensure that we produce a sturdy, well-balanced, vigorously growing tree. The potting medium is a large expense of the business. We make our own potting medium and compost from sawdust and chicken manure bought from neighbouring farms
