The RYA Competent Crew practical is the first course for the Day Skipper qualification.
You need no previous experience, as this course introduces you to sailing, covering basic seamanship, basic helmsmanship, nautical terms, includes much practical sailing, anchoring, coming into the mooring and very importantly about safety.
During the 5 day live aboard Practical RYA Competent Crew Module you will gain the following:

Yachtmaster Sailing School is a Royal Yachting Association ~RYA~ recognised Training Establishment and our RYA issued Certificates of Competence are Endorsed by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency ~MCA~ of the United Kingdom.
These Certificates are the International Benchmark for Excellence in Sail Training and are the Recognised Qualification to obtain employment in the Yachting and Super Yachting Industries.
The Royal Yachting Association is an internationally recognised Certificate because holds its Certificates to a higher Standard; because of this the foundation of the Course is as important as the main body of the Course.
The RYA Competent Crew Course is an important introductory Course ensuring a solid foundation to your training. We will introduce you to the proper RYA techniques of managing a yacht, sail handling, rope work, seamanship, helmsmanship, emergency equipment and personal safety equipment while allowing you to practice man overboard and getting used to various nautical terms.
It really is a vitally important Practical Week.
This is a 5 day live aboard course from Monday to Friday and your sail training normally starts from Club Mykonos near Langebaan.
We have a full set of sails which you can get to experience in different conditions and we also have Radar, Navigational equipment, GPS and AIS on board our yachts.

**An RYA Competent Crew Completion Certificate will be issued on successful completion of the course**

Yachtmaster Sailing School was founded by Henton Jaaback in 1990.
Henton was the First RYA Instructor and Examiner in South Africa and was well known for years of Service as
Royal Cape Yacht Club's Safety Officer and for his Comprehensive Handbook covering Competent Crew through to
Yachtmaster Ocean. Henton remains a Consultant and we continue his traditions of Excellence in Sail Training.
Yachtmaster Sailing School is privileged to be able to offer our Shore Based Theory Classes at
South Africa's Premier Yacht Club, the Royal Cape Yacht Club, Cape Town.
Our Practical Courses are run from Club Mykonos, Langebaan which is 150km North of Cape Town and Situated on
Saldanha Bay and the Langebaan Lagoon.
This is the best area in South Africa for Sail Training and is the only area in South Africa approved by the RYA for
conducting it's Examinations. Saldanha Bay offers all the training challenges and opportunities that the Solent offers.
The Port of Saldanha is a busy Ore Export Hub with Giant Bulk Carriers loading Iron Ore and Steel Products.
A busy fishing fleet provides plenty of Traffic for training and buoys and lighthouses are abundant.
In contrast to this the Langebaan Lagoon provides calm pristine waters with strong tides and narrow channels for Pilotage Training.
Outside the Bay Heads the Stark and Beautiful Granite studded West Coast provides navigation and pilotage challenges.
Dolphins, seals and seabirds of all species abound together with many whales in the winter.
Occasional Orcas are seen by the Lucky
Our maximum is 5 students and minimum of 3 for each practical course which ensures that each student gets the individual attention needed, while also making sure that there are sufficient numbers to crew the yacht.
