Elephant Sanctuary

The Elephant Sanctuary is a South Africa holiday activity with a difference. Located only an hour out of Johannesburg and Pretoria, the Elephant Sanctuary offers an experience of a lifetime!  A “halfway house” for elephants in need, the Elephant Sanctuary has three operations, Hartebeespoort, Plettenberg Bay and Hazyview. Spend time, learning about and interacting with these highly intelligent and delightful animals. You will find each has a different character, personality and temperament.

Ferry Cruise

The Keurbooms River Nature Reserve, situated 5 km from Plettenberg Bay, stretches up the river for about 5 to 6 km. To experience the beauty of the reserve you can either take a ferry trip which lasts 2½ hours or you can hire a boat and travel up the river by yourselves. This is one of the more picturesque places of interest in South Africa, and there are a number of picnic spots next to the river with little beaches where you can spend your whole day swimming, tanning or fishing, whilst enjoying the stunning scenery and wonderful bird life.

Soweto and Johannesburg Day Trip

Johannesburg can boast a number of unique and popular South Africa holiday activities. The most famous of course would be a day trip visit to Soweto, a town that has become synonymous with South Africa’s struggle for freedom. Other places of interest include The Apartheid Museum and Gold Reef City where you can experience a recreation of the gold rush of the last century.

Addo National Elephant Park

Located just an hour’s drive from Port Elizabeth, you will find the malaria-free Addo Elephant National Park. A sanctuary to more than 450 Elephant, Buffalo, Black Rhino, various species of Birds and Antelope, this park offers a wide variety of South Africa holiday activities including horse trails, day and night guided game drives as well as hiking trails.

Arniston – Overberg

Named after the ship that went aground there in 1815, this is a popular getaway with lots to offer. Attractions include the old fisherman’s village of Kassiesbaai; the harbour where fishermen return with the fresh catch of the day; a rocky coastline; beaches and sand dunes; and the huge limestone caves of Waenhuiskrans. Sand skiing, kite surfing and the 6km De Mond to Arniston Trail are popular activities. The town as a whole is a National Monument.

Balloon Safari

A Balloon Safari with Bill Harrop’s is one of the most elegantly adventurous South African holiday activities!
Hot-air ballooning is an exciting, eccentric adventure. Glide above the treetops in the gentle light of dawn, or dream among the clouds if weather permits. Sipping fine champagne, marvel at panoramic views of the Magalies River Valley and Hartbeespoort Dam and see the skyline of Johannesburg 75km to the south-east. After landing, enjoy a freshly prepared champagne brunch.

Battlefield Tours

The KwaZulu-Natal battlefields have always been high on the list of places of interest in South Africa for history buffs. The Drakensberg and Natal Midlands offer many opportunities to re-discover British, Zulu and Boer clashes on the battlefield. The perfect way to experience a battlefield getaway is to have a specialist battlefield guide weave the historical details together with anecdotes and emotion. One of the more educationally-focused South Africa holiday activities, a KwaZulu-Natal battlefield tour is a superb way to relive the past and personally experience a major historical site.

Birds of Eden

Birds of Eden is a world class free flight bird sanctuary. Situated next to Monkeyland, the unique two hectare dome (the World’s largest) spans over a gorge of indigenous forest and includes a mysterious ruin with a walk-behind waterfall. The sanctuary’s dome has the ability to synthesize thunder and create short spells of rain from an irrigation system in the dome structure, and roofed viewpoints within the gorge have been erected for use during these brief rain storms.

Bungi Jumping

Some South Africa holiday activities are strictly for thrill seekers. Adrenalin junkies should consider a visit to the highest commercial bungi jump in the world at Bloukrans River Bridge. The height is 216 metres with a 7 second free fall! The adventure company Face Adrenalin will make sure you have an experience of a lifetime! Bookings are essential.
