The Stellenbosch Go Club will be hosting the 2010 Stellenbosch Open Go Tournament.
It is intended to be a qualifying tournament for the 2010 South African Candidates’ Tournament. Players of all level are welcome.

Room 3018, Mathematics Department (van der Sterr Building), University of Stellenbosch, Stellenbosch

The tournament is open to all players. You will be able pay your SAGA membership fee for 2011 at the tournament, if you wish (assuming SAGA’s 2011 membership costs are finalized by then).

Format :
The tournament will be a 3 round MacMahon tournament, with the bar set at an appropriate level. The time limit will be 30 minutes main time and then Canadian byo-yomi 25 stones in 8 minutes, which equates to about 19 seconds per move.

Prizes :
The winner of the tournament will be named the 2010 Stellenbosch Go Champion, and will receive a voucher for Go books/equipment. Other players that win all 3 of their games will also receive such a voucher.

Accommodation :
Any players traveling in for the tournament who need accommodation can also contact Francois – the Stellenbosch Go club would be pleased to try to find you a host.

Weaker players are a bit over-awed by the rank differences as generally it is our stronger players who take part.Congatulations to:- Victor for winning the tournament.- Ben Bredenkamp on winning group 2 and gaining promotion to 4k- Chris on his upset against Konrad. There has been a request to look at some sort of handicap system for the lower group. This was SAGA’s final internet tournament for 2010.

Thechallenge here is availability of go players who are able to invest significant amounts of time over asufficient period to develop players and keep their interest, and our abilities to support clubs wherethere is sufficient interest, but lack of access to the internet and contact with other go players.
