The VIP Toilet


Model A: Ventilation Improved Pit Latrine


The CEMFORCE EasyLoo VIP Toilet is constructed by installing a toilet superstructure with a floor slab over an unlined, partly or completely lined pit. The toilet complies with SANS 10365-1:2004 specifications and bears an Agrément South Africa certificate of approval (Cert. No.: 299-2003).The Superstructure

The internal measurements of the superstructure are 1 100 mm deep x 840 mm wide x 2 000 mm high. The door, made from 1 mm thick galvanized steel and measuring 815 mm x 1 800 mm high, opens outwards on a steel pivotal hinge and has a spring-loaded lockable latch.The walls and roof of the toilet are manufactured under controlled factory conditions as 40 mm thick lightweight cement panels and assembled with 8 mm bolts on site.The panel construction resembles a sandwich of two 6 mm glass reinforced cement (GRC) skins and a 28 mm polystyrene and cement core. When the pit is full, the toilet can be moved to a new pit with a simple tool we developed.  This can be done at household level without having to take the toilet apart or the use of expensive machinery.The superstructure for people with disabilitiesThe superstructure is 1 800 mm x 1 700 mm.  The door, made from 1,2 mm thick galvanised steel, measures 1 120 mm x 1 800 mm high.

The floor slab
The dimensions of the floor slab are 1 500 mm x 2 000 mm x 75 mm thick and it is manufactured under controlled factory conditions from polystyrene cement (density 1000 kg/m3), reinforced with #156 steel reinforcing mesh and a hard wearing single 6mm GRC skin applied on top.The pitThe pit is round with a diameter of 1 250 mm x 2 000 mm deep (capacity = 2.4 m3). The pit does not need to be lined in stable soil conditions and has a low water table, but it is however recommended that at least one 500mm collar be used to prevent the top soil from collapsing and to prevent penetration of surface water into the pit.The pit collar consists of a 5 mm thick polyethylene tube, 500 mm deep, with ribs for reinforcement. The pit can be completely lined by combining a number of collars on top of each other (4 x 500 mm collars = 2 m deep lining).The plastic pedestalThe plastic pedestal (Atlas Plastics Type VIP 300, color: granite) with white plastic toilet seat and cover (DPE FR01 ELF 82) is a standard fitting to the toilet.

The vent pipe
The vent pipe, 110 mm in diameter x 2 700 mm long (extending more than 500 mm above toilet structure) in black plastic with patented vent hood is also standard. All holder bats and bolts to tie the pipe to the roof slab are supplied with the toilet kit.Upgrading to a full waterborne toiletThe VIP toilet structure is designed to be fully upgradeable into a waterborne toilet. A standard cistern and 15 mm water piping can be used while access (plugged up hole) for the 110 mm sewer pipe is already provided. The VIP pedestal is the only component that must be removed and replaced (with a standard P-trap pan) while the hole in the floor slab must be closed up with a precast concrete plug (supplied by Cemforce).

The VIP Toilet

Usually the VIP is built over an open pit, dug in the ground, but in areas with unstable soil conditions a 250mm or 500mm collar is used to prevent the soil from collapsing and surface water from entering the pit. Similar to the ordinary pit latrine, faeces and urine enters into a pit where a process of natural breakdown or digestion by bacteria occurs.

The door, made from 1,2 mm thick galvanised steel measures 1 120 mm x 1 800 mm high.The pitThe pit is constructed from the same GRC panels as the superstructure, measuring 500 mm wide x 1 215 mm long x 600 mm deep, but the joints between the panels are sealed with a bitu-sealer to prevent water from entering the pit.
