In a news article in The District Mail, Dr Geoff Bihl said that he was extremely impressed by the SAPS and Helderberg Crime Watch (HCW), after a robbery incident at a womens' book club gathering at his house in Parel Vallei.

He said "Three guys armed with knives and wearing balaclavas entered the home and demanded jewellery and handbags from the women".

One of the guys watched the women while the others ransacked the house. The men then left, jumped over the wall and escaped.

One of the women managed to phone the sector police number, and they were at the scene within seconds.

"The police notified the HCW who assisted them and at 22H30, my wife received a call to say two of the men were apprehended near the Steynsrust bridge".

Geoff says "People are very quick to complain, but I feel the need point out the dedication shown by both the police and HCW in this matter."

"We have to stand together and take our community back."

Geoff has now also joined HCW.

Helderberg Crime Watch, together with Vetus Schola have implemented a pro-active foot patrol initiative in the Central Business District of Somerset West.

It offers:

  • Visible, effective and experienced patrollers from 07H00 to 19H00
  • Armed patrol officers with tracker dogs to respond to incidents.
  • Immediate attendance to suspicious activities or behaviour

Foot patrollers are easily identified, wear XXX large yellow bibs over a dark blue uniform emblazoned with Vetus Schola and HCW logos.

The aim of the initiative: Less crime during shopping hour,  less loiterers, vagrants and self-appointed "parking attendants" bothering clients.

We would like to get the support of business owners to help improve and clean up our beautiful village.

The AGM of Helderberg Crime Watch was held at the Lord Charles Hotel on Thursday 18th November. In her Chairperson’s report Jenny Findlay made two very important announcements.

The first was that the service provider contract with ADT has been terminated. ADT has been the HCW service provider for the past 8 years during which time they have patrolled our wards with their ‘hybrid’ patrol vehicles which acted as both pro-active patrol vehicles for HCW and also armed response vehicles to their own ADT clients.

In her first chairperson’s report Jenny Findlay stated that it was her dream to have dedicated vehicles to patrol our wards and she is to be congratulated in achieving this objective during her term of office.

The second important announcement was the appointment of Hugh Roe as Operations Manager of HCW. He replaces Capt. Willie Engelbrecht who has left the employ of HCW after 6 years of service to pursue his own interests and to dedicate his time and focus on his own security company Willgard. Hugh Roe is a valued member of the Steynsrust NHW and has a passion and enthusiasm for the safety and security of the community which we believe will be of great value in his new position.

Finally, the new board of directors was confirmed. Jenny Findlay has completed her 2nd term of office as chairperson and is standing down, as are Mr Tino Jeftha and Mrs Julia van Eden. Three new directors were nominated – Mr Leon Diederichs, Mr Johan Kruger, Mr Marius Victor.

The 2011 board is:- Peter Brand, Leonard Knipe, John Middleton, Leon Diederichs, Johan Kruger, Marius Victor, Alastair Shand.
