Ernest has come to propose to Gwendolen Fairfax, who is Algernon's cousin. Algernon notices that Ernest's cigarette case has an inscription saying "From little Cecily, with her fondest love to her dear Uncle Jack." and refuses to give his consent for his cousins hand until Ernest explains what the inscription is about. 'Ernest' explains that in the country, he must have a serious attitude for the benefit of his young charge, the heiress Cecily Cardew, and goes by the name of John and Jack is his nickname. In the city he is at liberty to be the libertine Ernest. Algernon has his own confession - let the play begin...
