Tracy, Lily and Jake, were spending time at the family holiday bungalow that was situated inside a game reserve owned by Jake’s father. All went off well, until one night when Tracy saw a flickering light out in the distance, which seemed to draw her towards it and make her think about Johnny.
Then a few days later, when she was alone at the house, she smelt smoke on the breath of the wind and walked outside to investigate. She couldn’t see any evidence of a veld fire, so still feeling intrigued by the flickering light that she’d seen previously, she walked out into the veld to try and discover where it was shining from.
She hadn’t gone very far when she spotted a figure walking up ahead of her, that she felt impelled to follow; mainly because he was wearing a green anorak, similar to the one that her husband, Johnny, had always worn.
She continued to follow the figure, but once they’d crossed a stone bridge that spanned a wide river, she lost sight of him. On the other side, Tracy discovered an old tumbled down farmhouse and also an ancient grave yard. So feeling intrigued about who was buried there, she traced the names on the head stones and discovered to her surprise, that members of Johnny’s family were buried there.
She began to wonder why nobody had ever mentioned this to her, but then suddenly she heard a sharp crackle that made her turn her head and she noticed that there was now a raging fire in the veld on the far side of the river.
She felt terrified, but soon realized that she’d been led to safety, by whoever it was that had been walking up ahead of her through the veld.
So who was the stranger that led Tracy away from the fire? And why did nobody ever tell her about the old farm on the far side of the river?
