This learnership is based on a qualification awarded by the AAT. In South Africa the AAT works through AAT(SA). This is a joint partnership between The South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA), South Africa’s top accountancy body, and the AAT, the leading international body promoting the skills and recognition of accounting technicians.
AAT(SA) is the premier professional body in South Africa dedicated to the education, development, regulation and support of accounting technicians. We also raise the competence and professionalism of our members through continuing professional development – paving the way for career advancement and raising standards of performance in the workplace.
Accounting technicians work in all sectors of the economy, including accountancy practice, industry and commerce, and the public sector. However, the LGAC Learnership is specifically aimed at learners who are employed in Local Government.
Content of the
LearnershipThe learnership consists of one level which covers five units:
1 - Recording Income and Receipts
Process documents relating to goods and services supplied
2 - Making and Recording Payments
Process documents relating to goods and services received
3 - Working with Computers
Use computer systems and software.
Maintain the security of data
4 - Professional Ethics
Apply general principles and procedures for ethical compliance expected within the accountancy sector. Develop, maintain and apply ethics in employer/employee situations
5 - Accounting Work Skills
This includes local government policy and performing effectively in the workplace i.e. basic health and safety, communication skills, team working
There are no formal entry requirements in terms of qualifications, but learners must have a good level of literacy and numeracy and must be able to complete assessments in English. Learners must either already be employed in a relevant Local Government finance role or be employed under the conditions of the learnership in order to participate in this learnership.
