Psychological Assessment

Children and Adolescents

A thorough assessment is essential and provides the necessary information for an appropriate intervention.

All assessments of children and adolescents include interviews with the parents, the child, schoolteachers and other therapists and medical doctors involved with a child. Child and adolescent therapy usually begins with the therapist meeting a child's parents in order to gather background information. This allows us to understand the problem and determine how best to address it.

After an initial assessment, I make recommendations regarding what type and frequency of therapy would be most helpful. The feedback session after the evaluation period can outline the difficulties identified and results in a discussion of treatment options including play therapy and parental guidance. This may be individual therapy for the child along with follow-up consultations with the parents to discuss parenting issues, or family therapy. Some issues that has been identified may be best addressed with a combination of these interventions.

The following psychometric assessments are being done with children and adolescents:

  • School Readiness
  • Emotional / Personality
  • Scholastic Ability and Functioning
  • Concentration and Attention
  • Intellectual ability

The following psychometric assessments are being done with adults:

  • Emotional / Personality
  • Intellectual Ability

My approach

In this practice the approach is eclectic and although having been trained to use various other therapeutic modalities, I integrate a number of approaches which enable me to deal with each unique individual. This correct choice of modality is essential to ensure a positive response to treatment.

I work closely with other professionals such as psychiatrists, paediatricians, medical doctors, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, educational psychologists and remedial therapists.

I believe in a multidisciplinary approach and also work with a team of attorneys, advocates and the family advocate helping a judge in legal matters and also act as a mediator with parents in divorce cases in implementing effective parenting plans.

The aim in therapy is to reduce distress, improve psychological well-being, help people to let go of their negative thinking patterns, manage their stress and to heal from traumatic experiences. Life doesn't have to be painful and there is always hope. You can have a happier and more fulfilling life.

I have the training and over twenty years' of experience and my intention is to help.

You come with your problems, anxiety, depression or guilt, but also your strengths and positive attributes which you might not have fully utilized. Together we can develop those capacities to their fullest potential and maximize your strengths to give your life new meaning.

My counselling style is warm, supportive and respectful. I strive to create a welcoming and comfortable environment that allows you to feel safe so you may share, explore and resolve your innermost problems. I am also very serious about myself and my work as a Clinical Psychologist. I strive to consistently improve my work through consultation, ongoing training, research, and self-understanding.

My practice is situated in a quiet and peaceful environment with a lush garden and ample parking, a pleasant reception area with refreshments and a dedicated medical receptionist – all which creates an environment of safety, privacy and comfort so that the growth can take place.
