ENERMOLOGIE - A BREAKTHROUGH IN THE TREATMENT OF CELLULITE French plastic surgeons developed the techniques used in endermologie. The process is now patented in the US as well. Endermologie uses rollers that often feel like deep tissue massage, over problem areas of the skin. At the same time, suction is used to redistribute the skin and remove dimpling. Those opting for endermologie usually need about 14 to 28 45-minutes sessions to see results and must also have monthly treatments afterwards to maintain the smooth skin look. Endermologie works best on candidates who are fit, and who are usually between the ages of 30 to 45. Those who do not regularly exercise may see only temporary results and those over 30 pounds (13.60 kg) overweight tend not to benefit from the procedure. Beyond regular exercise, drinking water on the day of procedures helps yield a better result. Doctors frequently ask patients to drink eight glasses of water prior to the procedure, and to maintain this habit daily afterwards. Clinically, the effectiveness of ENDERMOLOGIE lies in its action upon cutaneous and subcutaneous structures such as connective tissues, fatty tissues, as well as vascular and lymphatic circulation. As a result, the body is reshaped; skin quality and texture are improved. Side effects are minimal and may involve bruising or soreness in the areas treated. Many patients like the feel of endermologie and find this temporary soreness a small price to pay. Those who are extremely sensitive to pain may find the pressure exerted by rollers very uncomfortable. ENDERMOLOGIe was used initially to treat scars in patients who had suffered burns, to soften the scars and improve elasticity and mobility of the scarred skin. An additional, unexpected benefit was soon noted; an improvement in the appearance of cellulite. ENDERMOLOGIe has been approved by the FDA in the USA. Since being launched there , patients have been queuing up for what has been described as the 'most exciting breakthrough in body contouring since the invention of liposuction by a French surgeon, Dr Y Illouz'. Dr Illouz currently uses ENDERMOLOGIe in conjunction with liposuction, to smooth, tone and decrease post-operative swelling. A number of plastic surgeons are offering ENDERMOLOGIe as an alternative to liposuction , for those patients who feel more comfortable with a non-invasive procedure.LPG Systems describes how the technique works. 'ENDERMOLOGIe utilizes aspiration, produced by a vacuum pump, to suck the skin up between two motorized rollers into a fold or pleat. This fold is then kneaded by the two rollers attached to the treatment head. Because the suction level is electronically controlled, the rollers constantly adjust themselves to the thickness of the patient's skin. As the treatment sessions progress, the skin becomes more supple and elastic, causing the rollers to adapt and reach increasingly deep layers. ENDERMOLOGIe improves the circulation by increasing blood and oxygen flow to the suffocated cellulite tissues and thereby accelerating the drainage of the stagnant waste products of metabolism via the lymphatic system and the fine blood capillaries. The metabolism of the fat cells is improved, encouraging them to lose some of their contents and thus shrink in size. The dimpling effects of cellulite are caused by two factors; the swelling of the fat lobes that lie just beneath the skin, which push the skin up and the contraction of the vertical connective fibres which act as the anchor points and pull the skin down. The suction action of the massage stretches these connective strands, thus smoothing the surface of the skin. As the fibres are stretched, they are stimulated to produce collagen and elastin, which results in an improvement in skin tone. During the treatments, the skin is exfoliated by the kneading action of the rollers, thus improving the appearance. The ENDERMOLOGIe course involves the minimum of fifteen to twenty treatment sessions of 35 to 45 minutes duration. The new Cellu M6® Keymodule™Bringing Endermologie into the 21st Century!Endermologie is recognised worldwide as the 'Rolls Royce' of cellulite and body contouring treatments. This revolutionary French technique has been available in South Africa since 1998 and has become the treatment of choice for the majority of women. The term 'Endermologie' is from the French term, meaning 'through the dermis'. This scientifically proven treatment works through the skin to mobilize the underlying tissues and to cause positive change therein. Endermologie was developed in 1985 by a French engineer, Louis-Paul Guitay. M. Guitay had suffered extensive tissue damage in a car accident and was undergoing four hours of rolling manual massage per day, carried out by four different therapists, in an attempt to loosen and elasticize the scars. He found that these manual massages were so varied in quality that he designed a machine that would deliver a quality rolling massage, together with aspiration to nourish the area. This technique was used to treat burn scars with great success. Later the technique was adapted to treat healthy tissue, resulting in reduced cellulite, improved skin tone and body re-contouring. The company, LPG Systems, is now recognized as the world leader in connective tissue manipulation.Endermologie is a scientific approach utilizing the principle of negative pressure massage. The Endermologie treatment head is equipped with two rollers, both motorized, which roll and unroll a tissue fold, kneading and massaging the tissues. Between the rollers is a suction chamber, which applies a variable aspiration to this tissue fold, increasing the blood supply to the area. By manipulating the treatment head in various manoeuvres, the skin and the subcutaneous fat cell layer are mobilized and the blood circulation is restored. Improved lymphatic drainage eliminates metabolic toxins from the tissues. The increase in oxygen and nutrients available triggers the body's normal process for fat elimination and the fat cells begin to shrink in size. The connective tissue walls are gently stretched, which encourages the fibrous tissue cells to produce better quality collagen and elastin, thus toning and firming the body. Extensive scientific studies in Europe and the United States of America have substantiated these claims.Endermologie was the first mechanical treatment for cellulite to be approved by the FDA of the USA. Here, in South Africa, there have been articles published in many magazines comparing Endermologie with many other treatments available. In each case, the results obtained with Endermologie have been superb. LPG Systems® has now developed the new Cellu M6® Keymodule™. This new machine is truly a 'revolution'! The principle of action is similar to that of preceding Endermologie machines, but with very effective modifications. In order to allow the therapist to treat a variety of tissue conditions precisely, LPG Systems® has invented a new technology that is opening up unexplored fields of research. The most obvious innovation is the 'Keymodules™'. The 'Keymodules™' are sets of rollers, designed to target specific problems, such as cellulite, loose skin (e.g. on tummies after pregnancies) and localized fat (e.g. 'lovehandles' and inner thigh bulges). There is even a Keymodule™ designed for generalized wellness and de-stressing! The Keymodules™ can be detached and interchanged in a few seconds, allowing the therapist to choose a variety of tools during the course of a treatment, thus adapting the session to her client's needs. Another innovation is in the rollers themselves. Each roller is fitted with a miniaturized, high-technology motor. This allows the rollers to move at independent speeds, to produce the correct skin fold to treat the problem. In addition, the rollers can turn in the same or in opposite directions. (Forwards, backwards, inwards and outwards)This independence provides for variations in speed and rotational direction, allowing the therapist to obtain a large variety of skin folds in terms of their shape, depth and thickness. The optimum roller settings are pre-programmed into the machine, making the treatment less operator-dependent. In addition, the aspiration levels have been modified and the therapist can choose levels from 0.5 to 10, in increments of 0.5, giving a total of 20 levels. With the Keymodule™, the technique has been refined and there are only two treatment paths and two manoeuvres to master. The motorized rollers mean that the machine does the hard work and the therapist needs only to guide the treatment head. However, a great deal of emphasis is placed on the thorough analysis and assessment of the client's problem areas, so that the correct protocols can be chosen, programmes selected and treatments carried out. Clients have one or two 35 to 45 minute treatments per week and are still encouraged to eat sensibly, exercise moderately and drink two litres of water daily. A maintenance treatment once a month means results continue to improve!
