The Coltech Windows System is a Management Information System for FET Colleges. The system is designed to run on either a Local Area Network or a Wide Area Network and can handle the versatility of multi campus colleges. The following important points were used to comply with the development of the Coltech MIS:   o The Coltech System is a client server product that can handle the vast number of      information needs in a multi campus environment.
o The Coltech System runs on a Terminal Server network, which means that data      from all the campuses is shared or centralised on one server via
Wide Area Network (WAN).
o One student number range is used to allocate a unique number for a student, but
the campus code is included in this number. This makes it easy to differentiate      from which campus the student originally enrolled.
o Student and Financial data is stored according to campus codes and can therefore      give a summary or combined result of financial information.
o Courses of the total FET spectrum can be used with Coltech.
o Trimester, Semester and Year Nated Formal courses
o SAQA courses with Unit Standards and lecturer assessments
o Any other non-formal courses
o ABET courses
o HET courses, etc.
o Different Time Periods (like trimester, semester, etc) can be set up for each      campus
o All Coltech Systems include a user management console, which provides for Login
names, password and access rights in each system. These access rights are on
various levels ranging from administrator, supervisor, financial user, user, etc.A first for Coltech and FET Colleges in South Africa

o The Coltech System already runs on a WAN infrastructure at two Colleges; e.g.
Boland FET College and Sivananda FET College, which are the first merged colleges
in South Africa to link their campuses and CEO Office on one network via data lines.   o Sivananda also have a link to CT-Net, which provides Internet bandwidth to the staff
and students.
o Coltech uses the CT-Net infrastructure to support the Coltech users on-line, free of,
charge. On-line program updates and backup services are some
to be mentioned.
