HIV/AIDS AWARENESS CAMPAIGN POORTJIE
The Department of Communications (DoC) in partnership with Le’Entertainment Hosting Community Upliftment (LEHCU) will embark on an HIV & AIDS Awareness Campaign at Poortjie situated in Johannesburg South. LEHCU is a registered Non-Profit Organization with the Department of Social Development, REG date: 2014-06-23.
HIV &AIDS and Tuberculosis contribute significantly to the burden of disease faced by South Africans. This is particularly true for poor and vulnerable groups such as Poortjie Community which is situated on the outskirts of District Municipalities such as Sedibeng and the Westrand where access to healthcare facilities is made easy.
In an effort to address this, Government has to put a huge effort into addressing HIV and AIDS and TB in an integrated manner. The most important strategy to combat these diseases is the HIV and AIDS Counselling and Testing (HCT) Campaign which aims at creating awareness and scale up the integrated prevention strategy based on the following:
Use of barrier methods
Providing medical male circumcision
Scaling up syndrome management of STI
Early prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT).
Another purpose of the HIV & AIDS AWARENESS Campaign is that people should know their status early. This will be done by massively scaling up HCT services during the campaign and post-campaign, providing HCT in public and private facilities, homes, workplaces and public spaces.
One of the activities/services offered to Poortjie Community on the day will be to show people the benefits of prevention and early access to treatment once people know their status. To achieve this we will work closely with social partners to promote open dialogue among communities, civil society and social partners.
Everybody is welcomed, the event will start at 10am at THUSONG SERVICE CENTRE (MULTI-PURPOSE HALL).
