Is stress making you sick? Research done by Holmes and Rahe examined the medical records of over 5000 patients and looked at the correlation between stressful events/ situations and onset of illness. They found that there is a clear correlation between the stresses experienced and the likelyhood to get sick, and developed the Holmes and Rahe Stress Test which assigns numerical values to stresses which can be added together to establish the chances of illness ocurring (see for full table). Interestingly enough, they found that positive stresses (e.g. buying a house) canoften be just as likely to cause illness as negative stresses (e.g. losing a house). As one would expect loss of a loved one had a very high stress score, but holidays and christmass also contibuted to the overall susceptability to disease. (Information was taken from "The Social Readjustment Rating Scale", Thomas H. Holmes and Richard H. Rahe, Journal of Psychosomatic Research, Volume 11, Issue 2, August 1967, Pages 213-218)
