ABOUT THE METHOD ACTING AND VOICE COURSES The Method Actors’ Training Centre is the only acting school we know of in South Africa that specializes in Method Acting. The Method acting course is based on the techniques developed by Lee Strasberg, who was one of the pioneers in the USA who brought about the honest and believable acting methods we know today. He based his techniques on the results obtained, throughout a lifetime of research and experimentation, by the great Russian director, teacher and actor, Constantin Stanislavsky. Unlike the usual drama training obtainable in South Africa, the Method trains actors to experience sense memory (sight, sound, touch, taste, smell and overall sensation) and express the response freely and fully in order to give a truthful, real performance time after time. Actors learn how to employ sensory recall and emotional memory in order to recreate situations, relationships and emotions from their own lives truthfully. They are taught how to apply this truthful response to a character within a given scene. This enables them to express real emotion as the character, rather than indicating a response by pushing for an end-result. Method Acting is a process that develops over a three- to four-year period of time. The Method Actors’ Training Centre presents a part-time acting / drama course with a difference and should suit matriculated students with strong cognitive, verbal, linguistic, communication and analytical abilities who want to acquire in-depth acting skills. The Voice work is based on the work done by Kristin Linklater on freeing the natural voice. We work with relaxation, correct breath and voice placement, strengthening of vibrations, developing resonance, tone and volume as well as using sound to truthfully express thought and feeling.

Method Actors' Training Centre: Actor / Director Training / Part-time / Evenings

Different aspects of actor training are covered in Method Acting and An Introduction to Acting classes. Method techniques (relaxation, sense memory, practical application of Method techniques to scene work, text analysis, etc.) are not taught in the Introductory class and improvisation / scene writing / theatre games are not dealt with in Method. The Method process requires a period of time for comprehension and technique to develop. The Introductory class is more immediately fun and creative.
