One pass process without recycle
The technology uses a fixed bed tubular reactor design with one pass process, without recycle. It uses syngas produced by air-blown gasifiers, which eliminates expensive and energyconsuming equipment for air and gas separation and gas reforming. Due to its tubular fixed bed design and the method of piloting the commercial size reactor tubes, it can be easily scaled-up with limited risk. The development work started in 2005 with conceptual design and laboratory tests. Catalyst screening tests were conducted on both the selfdeveloped and commercially-supplied iron and cobalt catalysts to ensure optimum reactivity, conversion rate and selectivity.
Through a modular approach, the design and construction of an industrial scale pilot plant with commercial size reactor tubes was completed in China in less than two years. The plant has been commissioned and is being operated with success. Compared with existing technology, the new FT process is cheaper and as efficient, and its operating costs are similar or lower.
Another advantage is reduced water consumption and a higher carbon efficiency. This modular approach also means that it is quick to design and build and it can be implemented in phases, reducing the investment risk. Depending on the size of resources, and by using the modular approach, this technology can be implemented for a scale of between 2700 bpd (smallest single train) and 84000 bpd (ten larger trains).
