1.PRE-TREATMENT

Pre-treatment process refers to the treatment of metal surface, prior to applying the final finish, to retard corrosion of the base metal.

Aluminium Alloy Casting

Aluminium castings are treated with a 7 stage chromate conversion, as recommended by the chemical manufacturer.

  1. Degreasing (Alukleen)
  2. Rinse
  3. Rinse
  4.  Desmutting & etch(Acid)
  5. Rinse
  6. Rinse
  7. Chromate conversions (Alukoat)

Mild Steel pieces

Mild steel pieces will be pre-treated in accordance with SABS 064 code of practice for the preparation of steel surface for coating.  Section 5 para. 5.4 table 2 hot phosphate coating (Light Weight).

  1. Degreaser
  2. Rinse-constant flow of clean water
  3. Sulphoric/Phosphoric pickle
  4. Rinse-constant flow of clean water
  5. Zinc Phosphate (hot)
  6. Iron Phosphate
  7. Passivate

3 CR 12 Stainless Steel parts

3 CR 12 stainless Steel parts will be pre-treated in accordance with the following process.

  1. Degreaser
  2. Rinse
  3. Active N pickle
  4. Rinse
  5. Passivate

Sandblast

Sandblasting will be done if needed on stainless and mild steel parts.  All parts sandblasted will be washed to avoid contamination.

2.Powder Organic Coating

  • 2.1 Components and test panel: Pre-treatment will be carried out as stated in section 1 and the powder coating shall comply with the requirements as agreed to.

  • 2.2 Surface Appearance:The finish will not show any pinholes, craters, fish eyes, loss of gloss, orange peel, powder contamination or blisters.

  • 2.3 Color, texture and gloss:The finish will be inspected once per shift using the master samples supplied.

  • 2.4 Thickness: Will be checked on every twentieth completed item with a minimum of 3 determinations a maximum of five determinations using calibrated equipment.

  • 2.5 Adhesion: Will be tested once every job lot received prior to dispatch, using the Cross Hatch Method of SABS 159 (this test will be carried out on test pieces only).

3.Laboratory & testing

The following equipment is utilized;

  1. Pressure cooker SABS 1040
  2. Thickness meter
  3. Reverse impact tester SABS method 141
  4. Gloss meter done by  powder suppliers
  5. Adhesion (cross hatch method) SABS method 159

Pre-treatment system testing is done by Jondec cc daily. 
Pre-treatment system testing is done by Chemical supplier monthly.

4.Powder Storage

We have an enclosed Powder store separate from the factory and all powders are stored at 25 degrees Celsius or less.

5.Powder Manufactures

The Powder Manufacturer must be able to issue a certificate for powder supplied to us if needed.
