Rodney Burnett trained & qualified as an aircraft maintenance engineer at South African airways. He left SAA after 10 years service and was then employed as a sales/ technical representative for Chemserve food sciences. He resigned from Chemserve and then moved on to Brent Chemicals which were bought out by Ecolab approximately 15 years ago.
Bulkchem was started by Rod & Dawn Burnett as a sole proprietor in Feb 1994 and was registered as a closed corporation in 1996. Bulkchem supplied the brewing & beverage industry with bulk detergents & conveyor lubrication and employed a technical chemist, Mr. Rod Parker, to advice on formulations as well as getting product approvals by our customers including South African Breweries.
The company operated from a rented factory premises in expanding to two factories over time.
In June 1999, we decided to purchase our own factory premises with manufacturing facilities
In Aug 1996, Mandlachem came into operation as an equity supplier. Rodney Burnett & Raymond Thoabala each held 50% shares in the closed corporation. Business expanded as new products were formulated.
Raymond Thoabala resigned as a member in 2004 and our still current partner Phineas Rantji invested in the company owning a 33% shareholding to date.
Mandlachem is now recognized as a Level 2 BEE Contributor. (Certificate #: 007656)
Mandlachem won the supplier of the year award at Rosslyn Brewery in 2000.
Mandlachem won the “Brewing Best Service Supplier” of the year award at Rosslyn Brewery in 2006.
Mandlachem won the “Packaging Best M&P Supplier” of the year award at Rosslyn Brewery in 2007.
Mandlachem won the “Brewing Best Supplier” of the year award at Rosslyn Brewery in 2007.
Mandlachem’s major objective is to substantially reduce Detergent usage without compromising line performance.
Mandlachem opened another division, namely Mandla Sugar Supplies, which manufactured and supplied liquid sugar on the SAB Chamdor site. The plant was designed by Rod Burnett, and the plant was built by outside contractors. This sugar plant ran successfully for 32 months under Mandla sugar’s control until it was taken over by SAB Chamdor.
Mandla Sugar Supplies purchased bulk tankers and several Actross Trucks. This opened up new avenues as bulk transporters. Professional drivers were employed to transport all bulk caustics and acids for Mandlachem.
