The Greening Initiative aims to ensure that the World Summit is hosted in a way that demonstrates environmental best practice whilst countering the negative environmental impact of the many thousands of expected delegates. Part of this Initiative is public awareness and education. This site provides the public, and in particular Gauteng residents, with information on 446 sustainable development projects and products available in this province. The Greening Initiative is funded and managed by the Department of Agriculture, Conservation, Environment and Land of the Gauteng Province (DACEL), the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the World Conservation Union (IUCN)

The projects and products on this site have been categorised in the following ways:

  • World Summit Theme - agriculture and food security, education, energy, health, protected areas/conservancies, technology, waste management, and water and sanitation.
  • Relevant Environmental Convention – Convention on Biological Diversity, Convention to Combat Desertification, Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants, and the Framework Convention on Climate Change.
  • Type of Institution – government, government and partnerships, parastatals, NGO/CBO, and private.
