Mt Kilimanjaro is Africa’s highest mountain and the tallest free standing mountain in the world. As you trek towards the snow-capped summit listen out for cackling bird-life and keep your eyes open for various types of monkey. Hike through misty rainforests, rock-strewn moonscapes and dry, dusty desert. The sense of achievement as you gaze down on the ice fields and distant planes from the roof of Africa is quite simply overwhelming.
The Marangu route is the most popular, and therefore the busiest route. Its popularity seems to stem from the fact that it is the shortest and the cheapest route. It is cheaper than other routes because it has 'dorm' style hut accommodation rather than camping. This reduces the amount of equipment required on your trek and therefore reduces the number of porters on the team. The fact that the route is short means that it is steep. It can be done in 5 days but we only offer the 6 day hike to allow for more acclimatization to the high altitude.
The Marangu route is the popular 'Coca Cola' route. The Marangu route is called the ‘Coca Cola’ route because of its popularity and reputation for being the 'soft' option. Our Marangu trek includes 6 days hiking. As the accommodation is in 'dorm' style huts, this route is great for those who want to socialize with other trekkers. This is the easiest route to the summit, Marangu takes you at a gentle pace through forests, moorlands and then across ‘The Saddle’, a high altitude desert to Kibo Hut. From here, an early start is made to Uhuru Peak. The path zigzags up frozen scree, where the view from Gillman’s point can be spectacular. Uhuru Peak lies a further 1 hour 30 minutes around the rim.
