The first 2 foals of the season have safely touched down! Pohlands Carpe Diem is a lovely, very tall chestnut filly by Calvados out of Valley Girl (Vallon Rouge / Pohlands Westside Story SAW). And the newest addition is a chestnut colt by Larino out of Pohlands Waterford (Wachmann III / Regal Breeze xx).

Pohlands Carpe Diem

Good end to 2009 at Cape Town WCQ

Pohlands Stud was very proud to be so well represented throughout the grades at the Cape Town WCQ show held at Judy Louw's wonderful Hout Bay venue. What a treat to be spoilt by a fantastic venue, wonderful show organisation and the privelege of world renowned course builders Frank Rothenberger and Andreas Hollman (Germany) - and of course the Pohlands horses doing us proud!

Warrangal P (Wachamnn III / Spanish Temptress xx) and Lisa Williams acquitted themselves well in the 1.50m classes. Warrangal's full sister, Equilibrium's Watch Me (Wachamnn III / Spanish Temptress xx), ridden by Lorette Knowles-Taylor made a very respectable debut in their first World Cup Qualifier and placed in the 1.40m speed class.

Pohlands Witch Hazel (Wachmann III / Crimson Silk xx) and Carey Pohl competed in their first 1.40m class, the Western Province Showjumping Championships, and jumped 2 clear rounds but carried 1 time penalty forward from the first round to finish a respectable 7th - the highest placed non-imported horse! Horses in the line-up included the likes of Shiraz, Gold Rush and Ottwald. Witch Hazel also placed 4th in the 1.30m Championship and in the 1.30m welcome stakes.

Pohlands Madonna (Milan / Pohlands Rule SAW) ridden by Greg Scott, Pohlands McKinley (Milan / Pohlands Whisper SAW) owned and ridden by Anthea Hart and Pohlands Wizard of Oz (Wachmann III / Golden Rapture xx) owned and ridden by Elizabeth Bryant all placed in the 1.30m classes. Trinity's Cuppachino P (Concerto Imp Hol / Pohlands Windsong SAW) and Mandy Mason took some time out from their busy eventing schedule and also jumped well in the 1.30m classes.

Pohlands Watchword (Wachmann III / Ankunft NW) ridden by Tarryn Mason were fantastic in the 1.20m classes and placed high up in the line-up in 3 out of the 4 classes. Pohlands McCauley (Milan / Goosebump SAW) and his new owner/rider Tara Louw look to already be forming a good partnership and also placed in the 1.20m classes. Pohlands Whimsical (Wachmann III / Megafeat xx) ridden by Rogan Asken, Pohlands Lindomar (Lindenberg / Crimson Silk xx) ridden by Carey Pohl and Pohlands Weave-a-Spell (Wachmann III / Colourful Sectret xx) owned and ridden by Nick Trueb also all fared well in the 1.20m classes.

Pohlands Whyle (Wachmann III / Crimson Silk xx) owned and ridden by Jackie Topping and Pohlands Wendiba (Wendesi ' Northlands Glee SAW) ridden by Greg Scott made their trip down from Joburg well worth it, with some places in the 1.10m classes.

Interestingly we had 2 broodmares do us very proud at this show. Spanish Temptress xx is the dam of both Warrangal P (by Wachmann III Imp Han) and Equiproducts Watch Me (by Wachmann III Imp Han) who both competed in the World Cup Qualifier. Crimson Silk xx is the dam of Pohlands Witch Hazel (by Wachmann III) who placed in the 1.40 WP Champs, Pohlands Lindomar (by Lindenberg) who jumped in the 1.20m classes and Pohlands Whyle (by Wachmann III) who looked very exciting in the 1.10m classes.

SA Eventing Championships 2009

Well done to Tarryn Mason and Pohlands Watchword (Wachmann III / Ankunft NW) on winning the Intermediate event at the 2009 Eventing Championships of South Africa! In addition, Trinity's Cuppachino P (Concerto Imp Hol / Pohlands Windsong SAW) and Mandy Mason placed 3rd in the 1 star event.

Avis Derby 2009

After their fantastic win in 2008, Warrangal P (Wachamnn III / Spanish Temptress xx) and Lisa Williams had the unenviable task of trying to defend their title this year. Although it was not to be, a couple of rails down in the main derby is still no mean feat! Pohlands Westpoint (Wachmann III / Zest for Life xx) and Greg Scott both made their “big” derby debut and Greg was thrilled with their performance. We’re looking forward to Greg and Pohlands Westpoint completing many more!

Equiproducts Watch Me (Wachamnn III / Spanish Temptress xx) and Lorette Knowles-Taylor finished in the line-up in the 1.40m Mini Derby and also placed in the 1.40m lead up classes.

Pohlands Witch Hazel (Wachmann III / Crimson Silk xx) and Carey Pohl placed in 2 of the 1.35m lead up classes and qualified high up for the 1.35m Micro derby, out of the original 91 starters! Pohlands Madonna (Milan / Pohlands Rule SAW) and Greg Scott also fared well in the 1.35m classes.

Pohlands Horses in National Squads

Huge congratulations to Warrangal P (Wachamnn III / Spanish Temptress xx) and Lisa Williams who have been selected as part of the National showjumping squad and Trinity's Cuppachino P (Concerto Imp Hol / Pohlands Windsong SAW) and Mandy Mason who have been added to the National eventing training squad. We are holding thumbs that we'll be seeing you at the 2012 London Olympics!

Highlights from 2008

Pohlands horses were well represented at the South African Junior Champs in December 2008:

  • Pohlands West End Girl (Wachmann III / Recoup xx) owned and ridden by Alex Potts was selected for both the Eastern Cape dressage and showjumping teams.
  • Pohlands Westcliff (Wachmann III / Crimson Silk xx) was selected as part of the winning Transvaal Horse Society showjumping team and well placed in the JA classes.
  • Pohlands Widget (Wachmann III / Alzu Peptalk) was selected as part of the Western Province dressage team. This after their winning the Western Province Junior EM Championship.
  • Pohlands Wizard of Oz (Wachmann III / Golden Rapture xx) owned and ridden by Elizabeth Bryant was selected for the Western Province showjumping team.
  • Pohlands Weldon ridden by Kayla Gertenbach placed in the JA classes.

In 2008 the South African National Equestrian Federation awarded trophies for the first time to give recognition to breeders for their efforts. Pohlands Stud was the proud recipient of the Duncan Asken Trophy for the breeder of the top SA Warmblood, Equilibriums Warrangal P (Wachamnn III / Spanish Temptress xx). Warrangal was bought from Pohlands Stud as a two year old by Lisa Williams, who has produced him all the way to the top level. The pair of them have an impressive number of wins to their credit at the highest level – international A-grade.

Also presented to Pohlands Stud was the Northlands Trophy for the best sire of SA Warmbloods, which was Wachmann III.

Pohlands Stud are the very proud breeders of Equilibriums Warrangal P (Wachmann III / Spanish Temptress xx), who became the first SA Warmblood to win the prestigious Avis South African Derby with Lisa Williams. Prior to their big derby win, Lisa and Warrangal also came second in the South African Showjumping Championships earlier in the year. Big congratulations to Lisa and Warrangal!

Warrangal’s full sister Equilibriums Watch Me P (Wachmann III / Spanish Temptress xx) ridden by Lorette Knowles-Taylor also faired well at the Avis Derby 2008, being placed in the 1.35m classes. Later on in the year Watch Me followed her big brother Warrangal in the running order of the Western Province Championships, and ended up with a very credible 4 penalties in her first 1.40m class. We look forward to watching Lorette and Watch Me progress over the years to come.

Continuing with the Derby theme, Pohlands Westcliff (Wachmann III / Crimson Silk xx) won the 2008 Junior South African Derby. Full brother to Westcliff, Pohlands Whyle (Wachmann III / Crimson Silk xx) owned and ridden by Jackie Topping, did consistently well in the young horse showjumping classes. The pair ended up coming second in the series. Whyle and Westcliffe’s full sister Pohlands Witch Hazel (Wachmann III / Crimson Silk xx) continued with her fine form in 2008. After having won the 2007 South African Junior Showjumping Championships as a young seven year old with Amber Rathbone, she returned to Pohlands Stud early in 2008. Now being ridden by Carey Pohl after her loan to Amber, she won the 1.30m Championships at the Cape Town World Cup Show.

At the year ending Cape Town World Cup show in Hout Bay, Pohlands Stud was well represented throughout the grades. Already mentioned are Equilibrium’s Watch Me P and Pohlands Witch Hazel, but other Pohlands horses were also in the prizes. Pohlands Cuppuccino (Concerto Imp Hol / Pohlands Windsong SAW) owned and ridden by Mandy Mason were placed in all four of the 1.20m classes. Cuppucino and Mandy went on to finish 2nd in their first 1 star eventing competition at Northern Farms a week later. Well done Mandy!

Pohlands Witchingham (Wachmann III / Pohlands Windsong) produced by Mandy Mason but now with a new owner/jockey, finished 3rd in the Novice eventing at Northern Farms in December.

Pohlands Why Hello (Wachmann III / Howzit xx) ridden by Pat Pohl were reserve champions in the Eastern Cape Dressage Championship earlier in the year.

Pohlands Westpoint (Wachmann III / Zest for Life xx) ridden by Greg Scott continues to feature in the 1.40m classes, as does Northlands Windblue (Windjammer / Colourful Secret xx) ridden by Rogan Asken in the 1.50m classes. Windblue and Rogan consistently compete in the World Cup classes, and as always, pose a threat in the Derby.

We like to keep up to date with what Pohlands progeny are doing, so please send us information and photos!
