Cummins Onan offers a complete line of residential emergency standby systems. You can depend on clean, quiet power whether your needs call for a permanently-installed standby system or a portable solution.

Our permanently-installed models are neighborhood-friendly, and run on natural gas or propane. They are no more conspicuous than a central air conditioning unit and are typically linked directly to your permanent fuel supply. During a power interruption, the Cummins Onan residential emergency standby system will automatically deliver the power to keep your home running smoothly. And it will reset once the power returns.

The sections below will help you understand the advantages of one fuel compared to another.

Natural Gas Generator Sets

A natural gas generator connects directly to a natural gas line for clean, safe and quiet operation.

Advantages:

  1. Usually unlimited fuel source - refueling not necessary

  2. Clean burning

  3. Almost always available during power outages

  4. No unsightly tank required

Disadvantages:
  1. May be unavailable during natural disasters (earthquakes, etc.)

  2. Lower power output (30% less BTU's per unit than gasoline)

  3. Larger tanks are not aesthetically pleasing (unsightly)

  4. Fuel system plumbing results in higher installation cost

  5. Not available in many areas

Propane Generator Sets

These generators are designed to be fueled by either LP vapor or LP liquid withdrawal. They also connect directly to a natural gas line for clean, safe and quiet operation.

Advantages:

  1. Long shelf life

  2. Clean burning

  3. Easily stored in both large tanks or in smaller 5-10 gallon cylinders

  4. Obtainable during power outages - gas stations may be unable to pump other fuels during an area wide outage but, LP tanks are usually stocked full

  5. Home delivery available for larger tanks is commonplace

Disadvantages:
  1. Pressurized cylinder of flammable gas

  2. Fuel system is more complicated (increased possibility of failure)

  3. Larger tanks are not aesthetically pleasing (unsightly)

  4. Fuel system plumbing results in higher installation cost

  5. Some local ordinances prohibit the use of high pressure LP in residential applications

Automatic transfer switches, capable of automatic operation without operator intervention, perform the basic function of transferring the load to the available power source.
