Zinc Metal Spraying operates under SABS ISO 2063: 1991 for blasting and metal spraying, and is also an ISO 9002 mark-holder.

We only undertake work that requires a SA 2½ or SA3 blast clean prior to over-coating.  The Swedish Standard (SA2½, SA3) relates to the cleanliness of the steel prior to painting or metal spraying.  A SA3 blast is a 100% white metal blast.  A SA2½ blast is a near (95%) white metal blast.

Normally, for a 25-40 µm profile, a machine is used.  The blasting is done with steel grit in an automatic process for unworked steel profiles such as IPE’s, beams, channels, angles and tubes.  This results in an SA2½ or SA3 shot blast.

Grit-blasting by hand operators is undertaken to SA2½ or SA3 for a heavier blasting profile of 50-75 µm. This profile is used for metal spraying where the bigger profile is essential, and for heavy duty coatings.  It is also used to remove heavy mill scale or rust on old steelwork prior to galvanising or painting.

Zinc Metal Spraying | Cape Galvanising Consolidated (Pty) Ltd

Zinc sprayed coatings provide an excellent base for painting and as it is a slightly porous coating it should be sealed or painted to be most effective. Metal spraying in terms of the SABS specification can be used as a touch-up to repair damaged hot-dip galvanised coatings. There are several advantages to choosing Zinc Metal Spraying over other galvanising techniques.

Aluminium Metal Spraying | Cape Galvanising Consolidated (Pty) Ltd

Arc-sprayed aluminium gives noticeably better results than flame-sprayed aluminium, as the adhesion is better, it is less porous, and its resistance to sea water and salt spray is superior. Aluminium metal spraying offers excellent corrosion resistance for steel in marine environments and for items that will be immersed in salt water.

Duplex Systems | Cape Galvanising Consolidated (Pty) Ltd

The lifetime of the duplex system is 1.5 to 2.5 times higher than the sum of the lifetimes of the zinc coating and the paint coating system when used separately. In order to achieve the best adhesion possible when painting galvanised steel, it is very important that the steel is properly prepared. Coating systems based on epoxies, vinyl and acrylics have proven their success when used on galvanised steel.

Industrial Painting | Cape Galvanising Consolidated (Pty) Ltd

Various paint systems may be used, including inorganic and organic zinc rich primers and zinc phosphates, epoxies, epoxy tars, alkyds, acrylics, vinyl, enamels and polyurethanes. It is essential to blast before painting, because the removal of all rust and mill scale is of paramount importance in providing a long-term corrosion resistance system.
